CHAPTER 5 ~ RETHINKING THE CHICKEN, THE EGG, AND OTHER MEAT MATTERS
We almost got chickens!
May 8
I have discovered fresh duck eggs. They taste different from chicken eggs. In pure forms like soft boiled eggs, I actually prefer the duck. I get them locally. I love all the shell colors. And the shells are very thick.
I was surprised to see a banner for a Pig Hunting Tournament in Waimea, but then again, this is Hawai'i.

While I've been doing well on my flexitarian diet and pigs aren't on my menu, I'm also becoming convinced that buying organic and local is even more important. So if Greg decided to take up pig hunting, I wouldn't turn down the pork that resulted. It's local, it's organic, and it would remove one more nuisance wild pig that digs up ecologically sensitive areas. It's a win:win, except for the pig.
I love the farmer between the girl's school and home. He comes to the Parker School Farmer's Market on Saturday, but he's open at his farm on Tuesdays too. He has everything I want (except tomatoes) and I love his kohlrabi! The farmer allows the bread people to set up shop at his farm on Tuesdays too. I can get frozen pizza dough for Michaela's grilled herb pizzas using the herbs she planted in the back yard.

This is so convenient and saves me a trip into town on Saturday.

Dianne and Mitch almost talked me into getting chickens. They wanted to give me some of theirs. Not that the convincing was very difficult, especially with the girls along oohing and aahing over the baby chicks. Luckily events conspired to prevent it.
