August 27
This is a great night club/restaurant in Kawaihae. The Blue Dragon has a courtyard in the middle open to the sky, so you can see those coconut trees from inside the building. It has a nice stage and good sized dance floor, and great food.
But the real joy of the evening was hearing Gary Wasburn's Legacy Jazz Band play. He teaches jazz and ensemble at Honoka'a High School. The first I heard of him was in the Hawaiian Airlines in-flight magazine. His Jazz Band even won a Grammy!

The kids who decided to continue to play after high school are the Legacy Jazz Band - a small brass orchestra, and really good.

Why didn't I know about this?

The night at the Blue Dragon, Gary played multiple brass instruments. He also plays piano masterfully and composes music. See the email called Full Moon Tsunami.

Noa plays drums in the band, and later I saw him play keyboards. See the email called Full Moon Tsunami. I know his mom, Calley. See an essay called Elixir Perfected in my blog for a description of her yoga class on the beach.
