CHAPTER 2 ~ SETTLING IN
It finally stopped raining
I finally have my Hawai'i library card. The library is small, but the library system is statewide, so I have access to books at 51 branches.
In Wisconsin, the library was funded by the city. Here, the state picks up the tab. I guess that's part of why my Hawai'i property taxes are so low compared to Wisconsin.
Usually our rain is gentle, and it often falls at night. Last week it rained buckets day and night for seven days. I've never seen anything like it. Now I understand the signs along the highway that warn about flash flooding, especially in valleys between hills.

The library's interior is small and cozy but well lit. Besides books, we can borrow DVDs too. And their Hawaiiana section is well stocked, including cookbooks.
But my favorite trivia about the library is that they still hand stamp the return date in the book. Older books show years of stamps directly on the front page. Newer books start with a glued form attached.
I had forgotten how usedful this information is - if it's been a long time since it was checked out, that's a clue that I might not want it.
