Faye is back in Junior Lifeguarding class for the second week. The kids line up without being told for calisthenics. It looks like boot camp, but these kids love the teacher. He expects discipline and respect, and he gets it.
I love to people-watch at the beach. So many people make beach-going a big production. Families arrive with loads of gear, much of it designed to help them stay cool on the hot sand of Hapuna Beach: umbrellas, chairs, even tents.
By the afternoon, the beach will be dotted with umbrellas. This picture was taken early, so fewer umbrellas. Notice how clean the beach is.
They start out with jumping jacks, proceed to arm stretches and circles, then stretch their legs.
When the teacher signals, the class sprints down to the other end of the beach.
There they push into the water and begin to swim back to the south end of the shore.
There are always helpers on surf boards, watching the swimmers in case someone gets in trouble as they swim past "the rock" and head back toward the teacher.
CHAPTER 7 ~ CHOOSING YOUR ATTITUDE
