In a smaller house with no basement, storage space is at a premium. I guess that people didn't save and store as much stuff in the 1930's when this house was built. So I look for ways to use wasted space, like the upper portions of the closets that I can't reach. (Love those12 foot ceilings!)

My handymen installed access doors and later painted the whole bedroom. Now I can use that high-up closet space. I like the gauzy curtains instead of the louvered doors - feels so tropical.

As they worked, we had interesting discussions about single wall construction, common in Hawai`i. Horizontal trim like wainscotting holds the vertical wall boards together. It forces different solutions for adding plumbing and electrical wiring.

Sometimes wiring is run through the door trim. Other times they add a piece of trim that runs the length of the wall. Switch boxes jut out into the room.
Every day after the guys went home, I had work to do, mostly painting louvered doors. So I made a meditation out of it. Paintbrush up (breathe in) paintbrush down (breathe out).
